The readings from the Torah:
In this week’s Parsha, called Parshat Eikev, one of the main subjects taught by Moshe to the people of Israel in the last opportunities he has to address his people is to emphasize the source of their spiritual nurturing. During the 40 years they wandered in the desert they were sustained with daily manna from heaven, for some this source of sustenance was repetitive, for many it was excessively plain to their palates. Moses explanation on why God chose to do it that way was clear: “So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna …, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.” Deut 8:3
It’s not surprising that Yeshua, the Word Who Became Flesh (John 1:14), reiterates this principle during His confrontation with the Enemy (in Matthew 4) at the beginning of His earthly ministry. This story is repeated for two millennia to teach His disciples from all the nations of the Earth, that doctrinal points mentioned in the Tanach (Old Testament) are still valid and relevant to His Bride today. When facing Evil in our daily lives, many disciples don't notice when the temptation arrives and fail miserably each time. The Enemy will never appear to us with horns and surrounded by sulfur and flames. Yeshua teaches us that if we don’t know our Bibles, we’ll not identify the subtle influences the world and the devil are introducing in our lives.
Only by feeding regularly from the Scriptures, we’re able to fill ourselves with biblical principles. With time, these foreign ideas start to become a natural behavior and safely guide us through every temptation and battle. Our spiritual strength and understanding will always reside in our familiarity with God’s character, His Scriptures, the Mashiach, and His plans for our lives. By sanctifying the Lord God in our hearts and nurturing ourselves in the Word we’ll be always ready to present a powerful defense of the faith we have in the Messiah and on the the work He perfectly operates in us.
