“For two years now there has been famine in the land and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.” Genesis 45:6-7
The Lord had given dreams to the Pharaoh to reveal His plans for the future. He had brought Joseph to Egypt years earlier so he would be there in time to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams. Joseph used his wisdom to make sure the people of Egypt would survive the famine.
Of all the different plans God could have used to save Jacob and his family from the famine, he used the most unlikely one. God decides to save the people of Egypt from famine and allowed them to be the ones to help save his chosen ones.
Just to confirm how strange this plan was, read what the Lord said to Jacob before he is about to cross the border into Egypt;
“Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt for I will make you into a great nation there. I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.” Genesis 46:3-4
Thousands of years later Egypt was a safe haven again. One very special family was being sent to Egypt, Joseph & Mary with their son Yeshua (Jesus). Egypt would be where they would be kept safe & survive.
The angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up” he said “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him” Matthew 2:13
When we think of Egypt we think of the evil nation that enslaved the people of Israel. They were the enemy. But God didn’t just use Egypt, he actually has a plan for them.
In that day five cities in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance to the Lord Almighty. In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the heart of Egypt and a monument to the Lord at its border. It will be a sign and witness to the Lord Almighty in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and he will rescue them. So the Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians, and in that day they will acknowledge the Lord. Isaiah 19:18-21
The Lord Almighty will bless them saying “Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria my handiwork, and Israel my inheritance.” Isaiah 19:25
God has a plan for Egypt, not only for the Jewish people. All the people of the world would be blessed through Israel (Gen. 22:18). We see some of this in how the Lord provides for the Egyptian people. No matter where you are from, God wants to bless you too, through his promises given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
