Jerusalem Prayer List

September 3, 2015
By Joseph Shulam

Five weeks before the Feast of Trumpets (Rosh HaShana- the Jewish New Year) starts a series of five Sabbaths that are called “Sabbaths of Comfort – in Aramaic שבת דנחמתא.” The reading of the Haftarah (the portion of the prophets) for these five weeks comes from Isaiah the Prophet.  It starts with Isaiah chapter 40 and continues from there north.  This week is the 4th week of “Sabbath of Comfort.”  The reading this week is from Isaiah chapter 60:1-22.  This chapter is one of my favorite chapters in Isaiah.
The prophet Isaiah is known as the prophet of comfort and I add the prophet of hope.  The last chapters of Isaiah are all full of great hope building texts that sustain Israel and foretell Israel’s future in this world and among the nations.  There is no ancient people that still exist on the world map today that has retained its identity, its name and has restored its ancient language, for more than 2000 years.  There is no ancient people in the history of mankind that has been threatened by so many different nations to be wiped off the face of God’s good Earth as the Jewish people.  I am not talking only about the Ayatollah regime in Iran that has made it a hobby to blame Israel and Zionism for every ill and for every problem in the world, and has repeatedly threatened to wipe Israel off the map.  There have been many throughout history who have issued the same threats:

Pharaoh of Egypt wanted to kill all the male children that were to be born in Egypt: (See Exodus chapter 1.)

Haman the Prime Minister of Persia in the reign of Artaxerxes I, in the fifth century B.C.: “Haman sought to destroy all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus.”  (Esther 3:6 ESV)

The Catholic Church during the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal and then in Central and South America.  The Inquisition against the Jews lasted from 1472 – 1821.  The aim of the Inquisition was to eradicate all the Jews from Spain and Portugal.

Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Europe not so long ago, had the goal of making Europe “free of Jews.”

So, in the face of this kind of history and in the face of the threats of modern day Iran and in the face of the deal that Mr. O and Mr. K have made with those in Iran who call the USA the great Satan even after the signing of the agreement to lift off the sanctions against Iran.  This is what this agreement is about it is not an agreement to stop the nuclear development program of Iran, it is an agreement to lift off the sanctions.  The centrifuges will continue to turn and the military bases will remain closed to outside inspections.

In a time like this we all need these “Sabbaths of Comfort.”

To this Isaiah the prophet says:  “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you. And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.”  (Isaiah 60:1–3 ESV)

Let us look at this text a bit deeper:
Isaiah is speaking in the voice of the Lord.  He is addressing Israel as a nation.  He said to Israel: “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.”
Who is the light of Israel?  John answers us this question in the first chapter of John’s Gospel: “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. . .” “The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.” (John 1:4–9 ESV)
The text in Isaiah and in John is clear.  It is not talking about an abstract light but about a person.  The light that Isaiah is speaking about is Yeshua.  I know this because of the continuation of the text in verse 3: “And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.”  The only Jew that the history of mankind that is honored and received among the nations is Yeshua the Messiah.  There are people today in every nation that receive Yeshua as the Messiah and receive the Word of God as divine and teach their children in Sunday school about Moses and about Joshua and King David, and the Messiah is Yeshua.  In fact Yeshua is the comforter of Israel and the hope of Israel.

Would you please pray for Israel and the Jewish communities around the world during this period of soul searching and contemplation of our sins before Yom Kippur the Day of Atonement!  Pray that through the prayers of Israel and through the reading of the Torah and the Prophets the eyes of many in Israel will see through the fog of the diaspora the quintessential Jew – Yeshua of Nazareth the only atonement that can wipe away our sins and give us an entrance behind the vail into the Glory of the Lord.

Read all of Isaiah chapter 60 and also 61, these are chapters that give us hope and that strengthen our resolve as Jewish Disciples of Yeshua for the hope of our bright future as a people and as a nation.  We are like Zechariah the prophet said: Prisoners of Hope.  We are prisoners of joy to have the privilege to hear the Word of God through the prophets of Israel and rejoice in the faith that all that God promised is true and will be accomplished one day, Amen!

Please pray for the invasion of Europe by hundreds of thousands of “refugees” / “Muslims” / “potential jihadists.”  No one knows or can know how many of these poor people coming from Syria and Iraq are encouraged and even directed to join this river of people that is flooding Europe in order to spread and even participate in Jihadist type Islam and export that nightmare to the green hills and cities of Europe.  There is no doubt that there are many even most of the people who are genuine refugees doing their best to find more peaceful lives for their families.  Probably the majority are genuine asylum seekers and with God’s help Europe and the world will find a humane solution for these people, but on the other hand there is the potential for a different kind of “refugee” and right now only God can discern who is what and who is who in this invasion of Europe.  Prayer is our only solution at this time.

Next Thursday we will have a reception and a meal with all the people who participated in the construction of our building, the builders, the Architects, Engineers, there will be both Jews and Arabs, and the reception will be held on the roof of the Netivyah building.  Please pray for this event.  It is a show of gratitude and a celebration of God’s faithfulness to all of us.

Please pray for the government of Israel in light of ratification of the nuclear deal with Iran.  The Israeli government has to regroup and ask for divine wisdom for the future decisions that it must make.

Please pray for the opening of the gates of Israel to massive Aliyah from South and Central America!  Israel desperately needs the Jews from these countries where Anti-Semitism is growing to return to the Land that God gave to Abraham as an eternal inheritance.

Please pray for the season of the Jewish High Holidays that is quickly coming upon us.  Jewish people around the world will be setting their minds and hearts to “Selichot” a period of confession and begging God to forgive our sins and mistakes and reconcile us to Himself.

Pray for Hilmi in Singapore, our sister Ahuva who had her 95th birthday, Gershon, Ilana, Leah, Miriam, Sarit, Ludmila, Tania, Zvi D., David Stern, Emanuel a dear brother in N.J., David V., Sara and Zvi, Amos, Lev, Mahmud, and of course Marcia, and Danah my daughter, and for Noaam my granddaughter, and Barry my son. Pray for Marcelo’s mother and father, for Paulo, and Clara in Brazil.  In Finland please keep praying for Anna, Satu-Maria, Anne-Mirjiami, and Tim Tucker.  In Japan please pray for Tomoko San, and Takeo Sensei, and Shoko San, Sadako, Toru San, and Daisuke Sensei.  Pray for Jason in Hong Kong, and Jim Young in Switzerland. Keep praying for Ruby a very dear sister, and for Marcia’s father and mother, Horace and June.

Please pray for God to stop the ISIS group from continued atrocities against people and against the most precious and ancient archaeological treasures of civilization in Syria and Iraq.  People who have no mercy and appreciation for history and for civilization will also have no mercy on babies and children nor for the old or the young people.  They are worse than beasts and the USA and Europe are standing by doing nothing about it other than scratching their backs a bit.  However, much worse than Europe and the West – are the Arab countries that do nothing about stopping this monstrosity called ISIS or Da’ash in Arabic!   I pray for the fury of the Lord to be revealed to the world in the same way that was revealed on Pharaoh and his chariots in the Red Sea.  Please join me in this prayer.

God bless you all and bless all that you do in your life that is good and holy for yourself and your families, your nations, and your communities.
Please keep us in your prayers personally, our health, and protection, and the sustaining of the Netivyah ministry, feeding the poor of Jerusalem, presenting the Word of God in Kol HaYeshua Radio, and in all the other good things that we are doing because of your support and your prayers. Thank you dear partners in spreading the Light from Jerusalem to the World.
