Jerusalem Prayer List November 8, 2018

This Friday, November 9th, the new moon of Kislev. The portion of the Torah that will be read in every Synagogue around the world. The reading is from Numbers 25:10 – 30:1. In the Hebrew Bible, we have two words for “month” – Yerach and Hodesh. The word Yerach is the ancient Canaanite word and it comes from the word Moon in Hebrew Yareach. The word Hadash means comes from the word “NEW” meaning “New Moon.” This Parasha is one of my favorite texts in the Torah. The reason for this is that it has two stories that reveal to us a new face of God’s nature. God is not legalistic and not inflexible. In fact, a part of God’s very character and nature is that He is a loving God who did the most out-of-the-box deed possible. He so loved the world, this world, the world that is full of crime and idolatry and abuse of children and women and men, it is this world that God so loved to send His only begotten Son to be sacrificed. But, in this Torah Portion we have Pinhas – the young priest who took the law into his own hand and killed Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s house among the Simeonites, and Cozbi the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a father’s house in Midian. These two people Zimri and Cozbi were from among the elite of their people. Zimri was a prince of the tribe of Simeon and Cozbi was the daughter of the leader/King of Midian. Pinhas in Hebrew and spelled Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, in the English Bibles. Pinhas also belonged to Israel’s nobility, he was the grandson of Aaron the High Priest. Each of these characters was acting outside the box. The question is outside of which box these nobles were acting. You see there are different boxes that we are either imprisoned by one or by the other box. Zimri and Cozbi were acting in rebellion against God Himself and against all of Israel and the leadership of the people. They were having sex in public in the entrance to the Tabernacle of God and in front of Moses and the elders of Israel. They act was so despicable that Moses the great man of God was paralyzed without knowing what to do. The rest of the leaders of Israel were looking to Moses to do something and they too did nothing. Pinhas who had no official authority to punish or to be a judicator of such crimes – took the matter in his own hands and took his javelin and made Shish-Kabab of Zimri and Cozbi. I wonder what Pinhas had in his mind when he took the lives of these two very important people – one a prince of the tribe of Simeon and the other the princes of Midian. I don’t know for sure, but if it was me, this is what I would think. I don’t care what happens to me! They can put me in jail or even stone me to death, but I am not going to stand by this shame in front of the house of God and let these two desecrate the name of the Lord of Heaven and Earth. I am going to do something to stop these two infidels and vindicate the name of the Almighty ONE of Israel. Boom! It was over in seconds. The police did not come to arrest Pinhas for taking the law into his hands and killing people without trial and without due process. Pinhas was praised by God and rewarded for this act outside the Box. What would happen today in most of the Jewish and Christian communities? Would such a fine young man like Pinhas be rewarded or punished? Would the leadership and the authorities today put the “LAW” above all and make sure that the trial of Pinhas has national coverage on TV and top rating? Would they sell advertisements of “Always” and “Tampex” during the deliberations of the jury? Yes, I am calling all Christians and Jews, to think outside the box for solutions to challenges of both Judaism and Christianity. Oh, No, I am not suggesting breaking the law in any country or in any place. I am just suggesting to be united and creative and dedicated and get outside the church buildings and call attention to what is going on in the name of the three holy grails of the French Revolution Egalite, Fraternite, Liberte. Yes, I do believe that liberty has limits and equality has limits and fraternity has limits. If we don’t see the limits and don’t balance these three values with decency and Biblical values they will lead our world into the decay of the Byzantine Empire and the smoldering ashes of great cities like Jerusalem and Rome and eventually the same fire will devour both Washington, London, and Moscow. Yes, there is a time that only the Zealots like Pinhas and Elazar Ben Yair the leader of the Zealots from Jerusalem that went with a group of men, women, and children, up on top of Masada.

The second story in this Parasha that is also outside of the Box is a story that precedes “The Suffragettes” of the turn of the 20th century and women’s liberation movement. It is a story of a “poor” man who had seven daughters. In Hebrew / Arabic today he would be named “Abu El Banat.” The father of daughters. Well, Abu-El-Banat died. According to the Word of the Torah – only male children inherit the father of the family. The reason is to preserve the division of the land of Israel according to the tribal allocation of the land by the mouth of God. So, that when the girls marry, they don’t transfer and mix up the tribal inheritance given to the tribe by God. But, these seven girls did not want to accept the decree of the Torah / The Law. They did not think it fair that only boys inherit their father. So, they went to Moses and logged a complaint and demanded justice – they demanded that they inherit their father. Moses the great leader of Israel did not dismiss these girls and say to them, “Dear girls, the Torah is the Word of God, I can’t do anything about your problem. We are a law-abiding nation and our future depends on our obedience to God’s Word.” No, Moses told them “come back tomorrow!” I will ask the Big Boss in the Sky.” Well, I don’t know what Moses expected, but obviously, he asked God and logged these seven daughters of Zelophehad complaint. Behold, God gave Moses an answer! Yes, dear Moses, these seven girls are right – amend the Torah make it possible for females to inherit. Moses, God said, don’t be surprised if tomorrow they will not want to also vote for who is going to be the president of the USA. These two stories in the reading on Shabbat are refreshing for me because they demonstrate the nature and character of God. The Lord God who created this world and named himself “God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel” is understanding us his creatures and willing to be flexible and even change the Torah to accommodate justice and righteousness on His earth and for His people. Praise His name above all names!

I have some bad news from my nephew Eli Levi – He has received the diagnoses from the oncologist in Cincinnati University Hospital and his cancer is stage 4 and not operable. The doctor presented a grim picture, but we know the Almighty God who created us and we have seen some marvellous answers to prayer and healing. Although I confess that I have been praying for members of my family who need healing and no healing has come, but strength and courage and ability to take the illness and continue to praise and elevate the Lord of the Universe and His mercy and grace above all in creation.

Please pray for Eli and pray to the Lord for the following:

  1. Pray for Eli’s spirit to raise up above his physical condition.
  2. Pray for Eli’s sons and bless them as they take care of their father in these hours of trials and tribulations.
  3. Pray for the doctors who are going to threat Eli to have wisdom and do what is necessary to keep him alive.

I also bring a special prayer request for healing of the eyes of a special friend of Israel and my personal friend. Pray for Sharon from Hong Kong and pray for total healing of her eyes. This is a woman who believes in the Lord’s power and has prayed for me and in 15 minutes I started to feel better. So, I am praying for Sharon and ask you to join me.

Pray for the rest of my trip. My time in Germany was wonderful and my time in Hong Kong was wonderful with the 611 church. Tomorrow morning, God willing, I fly to Singapore to teach in the Cornerstone Church for the weekend. From Singapore on Monday, I fly to Seoul, Korea! I need traveling graces and good health and strength to do the Lord’s work and motivate Christians to stand with Israel and pray and support Jewish ministries like Netivyah and others.

Keep praying for Netivyah in Israel and in the USA. The leadership of Netivyah needs your prayers and your support. We are still praying and seeking the Lord for a replacement vehicle for Netivyah in Israel. This has to be a van that can carry at least 9 people, it has to be a van that can be used for transporting goods for the Hamotzi food program, and it has to be a van that can serve the Munchkins – the Netivyah youth group.

Please pray for the international conference in Portugal in Castelo de Vide from May 17-19 and followed by a four-day prayer tour in the places where Jews were tortured and burned by the Inquisition between 1497 – 1821. This will be a significant conference for the awakening of both Jews and Christians and hopefully the state of Israel for the need to open the doors of Israel and absorb several million Jewish victims of the Inquisition back home in Israel. This ought to be the next major wave of Aliyah to Israel and the resettling of the Negev Desert according to the prophecy of Obadiah the prophet.

Please pray for Netivyah’s 40th Anniversary Tour to be a success and an opportunity for us all here in Jerusalem to show our joy and gratitude for your prayers and support.

Please continue to pray for Marcia my wife, and Danah my daughter and Noam my granddaughter, and Barry my son, and Beth my daughter-in-law, and Joseph Shulam my grandson, and for Marcia’s family and Beth’s family. Pray for Anna W. a dear old sister in the Lord who has done so much good for the Kingdom of God and for Jewish Disciples of Yeshua.

Remember our dear brother Jacob Damkani and ask the Lord to give strength and healing to Jacob.

Keep a dear sister in the Lord named Courtney in your prayers. She has a number of health challenges and I ask you all to pray for this dear sister and her healing of all those challenges.

There are good people who suffer, and our ministry is a ministry of intercession for those whom God puts on our path begging and crying for the sake of our brothers and sisters. How ugly is the attitude of Cain in the book of Genesis, who said, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” God’s answer not in words but in deeds is, Yes, Cain you are either your brother’s keeper or your brothers murdered. This is on the principle of the New Testament: “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17 NKJV) On the above teaching – let us do good because we know to do it and because it is the right and good thing to do – pray for our brothers and sisters who need God’s hand of mercy to touch them, their bodies, and our own illnesses will also be touched by His Mercy.

Please continue praying for baby Lion from the Huch family in DFW. Little Lion is doing better in the last week and is back receiving Chemo-Therapy.

Please continue to pray for our Jewish brother Hillel from Helsinki. Pray for Patty, Andrea and Tineke are all in the Netherlands and need healing from God. Continue to Pray for Julia and Victor our dear sister and brother who both need healing and God’s help.

Please keep praying for a dear sister named Zhou Wenlian living in China. There is a dear brother in Chenai, India, who has a deep love for the Lord and for Israel. He is sick with kidney problems and needs a dialysis treatment several times per week. He is Pastor and a leader in a church in his city and I am asking you all to pray for the Lord to heal him.

Margareta, keep her in your prayers she is a dear woman who is going through some real hardship and anguish for her faith. Please keep praying for dear Ruby. Ruby has been diagnosed with Lymphoma cancer. She is now doing Chemo-Therapy. Pray for Kenneth and Margarite G. in Tennessee. They are worthy for God’s grace and we are privileged to pray for the healing of these dear mother and son who suffer. Pray for Um Abu-Eid is a dear old Arab sister. Please pray for her healing and strength. Keep the following brothers who are improving with their health, but still in need God’s merciful hand to touch them with healing, George, Gary, Melanie, Aharon, Yuri Marianenko, Sarit, Ahuva, Leah, Ilana, Miraim, Yehuda H., David Stern, Paulo, Noami, Tim Tucker, Anne-Mirjami, Satu-Maria and Anna-Majia, Sinni Tuuli, Erki and Sirpa, Keijo and Salme, Evelina, Eva H., Horace and June Marcia’s father and mother, Marcelo’s parents. Curita Sensei, the Abe family, Toru, Takeo Sensei, Daisuke Sensei, Tomoko San, Sadako San, Yumi, her husband has just died last week, and keep praying for her father, Pastor Oharah in Okinawa.

Please pray Ritva Huhtala and for sister Oksanen, they need prayer for illness. Please pray for Louisa and Tony in Hong Kong. I have a special concern for our dear brother Goh and his family, and for Sister Christy, Sister Laurel, and for Brother Michael Knezevich.

If you would pray for those whom you know that need this prayer – the Lord will surely cover those for whom you pray and those for whom I pray. It is hard enough to live in this world and work and business-related issues make it harder and as much as we pray for the spiritual issues and health issues.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem and believe in God’s promises!

Joseph Shulam
