Jerusalem Prayer List August 18, 2017

By Joseph Shulam

This is the forth week that I am on the road in Asia.  Right now I am in Taiwan.  The Asia Messianic Forum was a great success.  Our dear brothers in Taiwan went out of their way to make us comfortable.  They organized a fantastic festival of worship, culture, good teaching, and a very wonderful reception for five Israeli brothers who were the main teachers in this three and a half days of festivities.  Now, the event is over and the love and acceptance and generosity of the Taiwanese brothers is still amazing me and motivating me to improve both my organizational skills and my deep appreciation for brothers in Asia.

This Prayer list is going to be short because I must leave the hotel in just a few minutes. There is only a very short teaching that I would like to bring from Jeremiah the prophet.

Jeremiah is a cynical prophet. The word “cynic” is greek and it comes from the same root as dog in greek.  Kynikos was a disciple of Anthisthenes who was a disciple of Socrates.  Kynikos was very sarcastic and that is why sharp sarcasm is called “cynicism” and those who use this kind of sharp sarcasm are called cynics.   Jeremiah the prophet was a little like Mr. Kynikos in his attitude toward people. Here are a few such quotations from Jeremiah:
Jer. 6:28, “They are all stubborn rebels, walking as slanderers. They are bronze and iron,They are all corrupters. . .”
Jer. 9:3, “And like their bow they have bent their tongues for lies. They are not valiant for the truth on the earth. For they proceed from evil to evil, And they do not know Me,” says the LORD.”

The most famous of Jeremiah’s cynical statements is from Jeremiah 17:5-9, Jer. 17:5-9, “Thus says the LORD: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the LORD. 6 For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, And shall not see when good comes, But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, In a salt land which is not inhabited. 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, And whose hope is the LORD. 8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit. 9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?”

I don’t know of any person who has not sinned in these sins and who has not participated more than one time in gossip or slander.  I am not writing this to condemn anyone specific, but just for my own edification and encouragement to be vigilant and remember to stay away from these sins and to be wise and God fearing.  In the New Testament Paul makes a list of these works of the flesh that can keep you out of the kingdom of heaven.  Among those works of the flesh are the following: contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, and envy.  Ultimately dear brothers and sisters these serious sins all have to be expressed with our mouths.  As we are now approaching Rosh-HaShana, and Yom Kippur, these are called the “terrible days” – I want to remind myself and you too to control our inclination to cynicism and sarcasm and especially control our speech.

Pray for me and for yourselves that we all reconsider the way we conduct yourselves and especially the way we speak about other brothers and sisters.

Asia Messianic Forum and a young camp in Taiwan were a great success.  We appreciate and bless our brothers in Asia.  There were more than 1000 people participating in this three and a half day conference and it was a great blessing for all of us from Israel and for those that came from more than 9 countries in  Asia.  We all thank God for this grace and ask the Lord to bless all the participants and especially all of the organizers.
God bless all of you who pray for Netivyah and stand with Netivyah both in spirit and in the material support.   May the good Lord fulfill all His promises and blessings for standing with us in Jerusalem and for blessing Israel!
